The video footage showing arrested self-styled godman Nityananda Swami in a compromising position with a Tamil actress is "genuine", a top CID official said today.

"The video footage is genuine. It is untampered and there is no indication of alteration in the video. As far as image comparison is concerned, " CID's Deputy IGP  Reddy told PTI.

Asked about efforts to trace the actress, Reddy said, "She is not an accused in this case.

The CD was sent to Central Forensic Science Laboratory Delhi  for analysis where it was found to be authentic, he said.

The case was entrusted to CID for investigation after the scandal broke out in March when some TV channels aired the purported video footage.

 Nityananda, arrested on criminal charges, including rape, from Solan in Himachal Pradesh on April 21.

"I am Krishna and you are my Gopika," sounds like an appalling pickup line, but if the Karnataka police are to be believed, it was normally employed by 33-year-old Swami Nithyananda or Paramahamsa Nithyananda of the Nithyananda Dhyanapeetam at Bidadi, Karnataka, to seduce his female devotees.

The 430-page chargesheet filed by the Karnataka CID on November 27 against Nithyananda was prompted by the complaint of a young lady (whose name and identity has been withheld by the CID as part of the witness protection programme) accusing the swami of sexual abuse at the Bidadi Ashram, 37 km from Bangalore, and in other locations. Her complaint says Nithyananda insisted on "seeking moksha through sexual union" with several female devotees by claiming to be incarnations of various gods.

The swami made them sign non-disclosure agreements (NDA) forbidding them to reveal sexual details. The signed NDA (in the possession of INDIA TODAY) states that "the volunteer understands that the programme may involve the learning and practice of ancient tantric secrets associated with male and female ecstasy, including the use of sexual energy for increased intimacy/spiritual connection, pleasure, harmony and freedom. Volunteer understands that these activities could be physically and mentally challenging and may involve nudity, access to visual images, graphic visual depictions and descriptions of nudity and sexual activity, close proximity and intimacy, verbal and written descriptions and audio sounds of a sexually oriented and erotic nature."

The agreement also absolves the ashram of any wrongdoing with an additional clause in the NDA: "By reading and signing this document, volunteer irrevocably acknowledges that he/she is voluntarily giving
unconditional acceptance of such activities and discharges the leader and the foundation, and anyone else not specifically mentioned here but directly or indirectly involved in the organisation, management or conduct of any such programmes from any liability, direct or indirect, arising from such activities."A further sentence states that the "volunteer also affirms that he/she does not find sexual or adult-oriented material associated with the practice of any tantric rituals or any other adult material to be offensive or objectionable."

DIG  of the CID says no court would admit an agreement like this, "full of illegalities, but we are quite sure that by the time the victims signed it, they had already been exploited or brainwashed with not much of a chance to protest." Gunasekaran, a Salem based farmer gave a land grabbing complaint against godman Nithyananda.

One Mr. Gunasekaran is a farmer from Siragapadi village of Salem district. He has given a land grab complaint against Nithyananda, to district police superintendent Mr. Ashwin Kotnis. In the complaint he has said:

“In 2005, I was introduced to Nithyananda through Chennai Krishnan Sakthi & Selvam. Nithyananda’s secretary Sadananda and several others approached me requesting me to donate my land located at Kadathur, Mukonapalayam to Nithyananda as he is interested in setting up an ashram at Siragapadi. Nithyananda also talked to me over phone regarding this. Hence I agreed to donate 50 cents of my land. Subsequently, in 2006, when I went to document registration office, they got my signatures, that of my wife and my sister in a land registration document, which was already prepared in English. But they did not talk about money for the land.

On 2010 October 12th, when I tried to sell my land adjoining the one I had donated to Nithyananda, I was prevented by his followers who said that the entire land belongs to them and showed the land registration document. Then I realized that I had been cheated. As Nithyananda and his followers threatened me I had not given any police complaint. In this situation, on Oct. 23rd current year, some people contacted me and asked me not to complain regarding this, as Nithyananda himself has told them to inform me that they are willing to pay price for the land or return back my land. But no payment has been made till date. So I pray that steps be taken to recover and restore my land.”

Govt seeks to take control of Nithyananda’s ashram

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government has issued a notice to self-styled godman Nithyananda's Dhyanapeetam (ashram) in Tiruvannamalai to bring it under its control. The move comes in the wake of a petition filed by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department in a Madurai court seeking control of the Madurai Adheenam and the high drama that ended in the godman being stripped of the title of junior pontiff of the mutt.

The Tiruvannamalai HR&CE joint commissioner issued the notice to the ashram authorities recently. "Following various allegations against the ashram, the government wants to bring it under its ambit using Section 59 of the HR&CE Act," said an official. The section empowers the government to bring any ashram or mutt under its control to monitor all financial and asset dealings and ensure submission of annual accounts to the HR&CE commissioner. This is the first time such a notice has been issued. "The ashram has collected donations and the notice seeks to bring the ashram under state purview," said the official. The ashram has sought 15 days' time to reply.

Efforts to reach ashram authorities failed. The ashram, started by Nithyananda in 2006, is located near the Tiruvannamalai temple. The 2.5-acre land, on the base of a hill, was donated by Bhanu Nainar to Nithyananda, a native of Tiruvannamalai, who was earlier Rajasekar.

"It used to be agricultural land but later became barren. Bhanu Nainar donated the land as Nithyananda wanted to start a branch of his ashram in his native place," said Sethu, a photojournalist based in Tiruvannamalai.

Nithyananda visits the ashram often and delivers lectures and conducts meditation class, said Sethu. The Tiruvannamalai ashram has prayer, meditation and dining halls besides rooms for visitors to stay.

The headquarters of Dhyanapeetam is situated in Bidadi, near Bangalore and cases have been filed against this ashram by the Karnataka government.

The HR&CE department had filed a petition in a Madurai court seeking to take control of the Madurai Adheenam after protests broke out over Nithyananda's anointment as successor to Arunagirinathar Desikar, the present head.

Karnataka, Tamil Nadu police search for absconding Nithyananda

Self-styled godmanNithyananda Paramahamsa, who is being probed by the Karnataka CID police for his alleged sexual exploits, has apparently gone absconding. Both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka police are on a lookout for the controversial guru for questioning, however, he is reportedly evading them.

Nithyananda , who was asked to step down from the position of the Madurai Adheenam Mutt pontiff, had been accused of rape by one of his followers recently. After the victim Arathi Rao contended that she was repeatedly raped by Nithyananda, the Adheenam Mutt senior pontiff sacked him. In addition, the Tamil Nadu government had approached a local court seeking the sacking of Nithyananda from the Mutt on the grounds that his appointment was illegal.

The Tamil Nadu police have been searching for Nithyanandafor allegedly conspiring to sell properties owned by the Adheenam Mutt. However, Nithyananda, who got wind of the police operation, allegedly went underground. The Tamil Nadu police have informed their Karnataka counterparts, who too are monitoring Nithyananda's ashrama near Bidadi on Bangalore's outskirts.

"The Tamil Nadu police have asked us to inform them if Nithyananda turns up at the Bidadi ashrama. Apparently, they want to inquire into one of the cases relating to the Adheenam Mutt. We too are watching his movements," a senior police officer from the city, maintained.

Nithyananda has been waging a legal battle with his former disciples, who have turned against him. Nithyananda even went to the extent of lodging a complaint against Arathi Rao, accusing her of blackmailing him for Rs.25 lakhs. He also accused her of morphing CDs and releasing them to the media. Nithyananda shot to limelight after his sex tapes allegedly featuring a Tamil actress were aired by leading TV news channels.

Arathi Rao recently obtained anticipatory bails from courts in Karnataka as well as Tamil Nadu where Nithyananda had filed complaints against her of criminal conspiracy.

The cult of preying and feeding on anxieties

The man who passed himself off as Paramahamsa Nithyananda for seven years, promised instant spirituality to hundreds, perhaps even thousands, across India and abroad.
It might be too early to brand Nithyananda as a conman, but what is emerging is that he is a psychopath who exploited people’s credulity and played on the minds of youthful devotees who, before joining his cultic order, might have demonstrated symptoms of psychic distress, anxiety, depression, apathy, disinterest, meaninglessness, isolation, social alienation and confusion. As a normative social system, Nithyananda’s cultic order is an alternative healing mechanism for the existential crises of contemporary youth.

Nithyananda, of course, is no paramahamsa. He is an ordinary man who was intelligent enough to capitalise on his youthful disciples’ loss of faith in the “rationalistic western cosmology and loss of the extended family system,” as sociologist Mansell Pattison has pointed out. But Nithyananda also tapped into the dissatisfaction caused by the impact of the prevailing economic paradigm which has created stress and anxiety, especially among those in the 30-40 age group whose members may have deliberately turned away from traditional psychotherapies toward his religious cult as the ultimate remedy for their anxieties.

These young men and women found in him and his cult — which is a strange and often frightening mix of the Vedic and tantric with an attractive and appealing focus on phallus worship — the path to physical and spiritual healing. What might also have appealed to the devotees was the stress on mental seduction and enslavement or mind control, so much so that they were prepared to abandon family, loved ones and well-wishers.

Some psychologists and sociologists agree that intensive conditioning (or brainwashing) is designed to compromise the devotees’ psychological integrity and indoctrinate them in a world view in which the ends (salvation, bliss and even personal health and wealth) justify the means (deceptive recruitment, fraudulent fund-raising and psycho-sexual practices).

The rest of Nithyananda’s so-called spiritual and healing prowess was built by aggressive and purposeful public relations directed not at the poor from our urban ghettos or despoiled rural backwaters. Rather, these are middle class, affluent, educated, and sophisticated youth. A network of branch heads in some southern Indian cities and those in the United States, mostly non-resident Indians with deep pockets helped Nithyananda catapult to spiritual stardom. It would not be out of place to point out here that the website of one of Nithyananda’s subsidiary organisations in US suggests that more than a spiritual enterprise the Nithyananda mission is commercial enterprise.

Brief interviews with some of Nithyananda’s disciples at his ashram near Bangalore and over telephone, with the primary question “what drew you to his order?,” elicited confused response. Emails from followers in support of Nithyananda were also important sources to understand what attracted the youth to his alternative spiritual system that offered a radical world view in distinction from the common culture, with explicit sanctions in regard to one’s behaviour, with a strong emphasis on separatism from the ‘world at large’ that is reflected in some degree of small group communality ranging from total communal living to frequent communal gatherings.

Beliefs
The standard replies typically comprised two strains of belief: a) he helped heal their physical ailments and psychological distress and b) we experienced truth and enlightenment, two very abstract concepts that souls far greater and intellectual than ‘Nithyananda, our Master’ have not been able to fathom within the context of Indian philosophy.

The likes of Osho Rajneesh, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Satya Sai Baba, Ma Amritanandamayi, Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar and sundry other self-proclaimed television-propelled godmen have, in their own distinctive styles, tried to peddle Indian spirituality, with their base and esoteric twists, to a gullible audience within India and abroad.

They have met with varied levels of successes and then faded away as the spiritual ferment, shaped in large part by globalisation and television, spawned other unconventional, secretive and deviant cult movements. They were sought to be given legitimacy and acceptability within society by obtaining the crucial backing of political parties and enlisting the support of the rich and the powerful, an approach that has almost always benefited the organisations in more ways than one.

But such groups have often elicited extreme hostility and distrust and have, moreover, been perceived as fundamentally subversive of civil order and the ideals of Hinduism. To some extent, part of the popular uproar about cult groups such as Nithyananda’s comes from bewildered, frightened and angry parents and other elders who cannot comprehend why the youth, otherwise socialised into the mainstream of society with many seeming advantages, should abandon their cultural and religious heritage to enter such ‘separate reality.’

The Nithyananda cult operated as a surrogate extended family and provided novel, if questionable, therapeutic and spiritual alternatives that confer meaning on individual lives and experiences, even if the devotees were deluded into believing so because of their existential vacuum. In doing so, he and some of his close confidantes exploited the weaknesses of existing institutions like Hinduism, family and modern psychiatry.

This is not to say that cults necessarily threaten the social order. After all, people are at liberty to exercise their preference for one religious movement for another. But what may endanger society is the return to obscurantism, superstition and blind faith that once constituted the bane of India.

 A study of Nithyananda’s cultic order — the reference to an ‘energised banyan tree’ and ‘energised puja items,’ besides a host of weird teaching practices that go toward deification of the occult — indicates that its devotees, drunk on their ‘sadguru,’ their ‘Enlightened Master’ of merely seven years’ experience, should exercise some caution in distinguishing between the truly pious and the charlatan.

பிறகு அமெரிக்காவில் ௭ம்.டெக் முடித்தேன். கிடைத்ததற்கரிய ஒருவரை கணவராகப் பெற்று இல்லற வாழ்வை இனிது நடத்திக் கொண்டிருந்த சூழலில்தான் 2005இல் ௭னது ஆன்மிகத் தேடல் நித்தியானந்தா ௭ன்கிற படுகுழிக்குள் ௭ன்னைத் தள்ளிவிட்டது. நித்திக்கு சேவை செய்வதற்காக அமெரிக்காவில் மாதம் இரண்டு இலட்ச ரூபாய் சம்பளம் தந்து கொண்டிருந்த வேலையைத் துறந்தேன்.

௭ன் கணவர் மற்றும் குடும்ப உறவுகளையெல்லாம் பிரிந்தேன். கடவுள் ௭ன நம்பிய நபரால் மூளைச்சலவை செய்யப்பட்டு ௭ன்னையே பலமுறை இழந்தேன். ௭ன்னைப் போல ஏராளமான பெண்களை அவர் சீரழித்துக் கொண்டிருப்பதை உணர்ந்து அவரை அம்பலப்படுத்த நான் தயாரானதும் தனது பண பலம் மற்றும் ஆள்பலத்தையெல்லாம் கொண்டு ௭ன்னை நசுக்கப் பார்த்தார்.

அமெரிக்க நீதிமன்றத்தில் ௭ன் மீது அவர் போட்ட ஒரே வழக்கால் ஆறு மாதங்களில் முப்பது இலட்ச ரூபாவை இழந்து தெருவுக்கு வந்துவிட்டேன். ஆனாலும் அவர் ௭திர்பார்ப்பதுபோல் நான் மூலையில் முடங்கப் போவதில்லை. ௭னது போராட்டத்தால் பத்துப் பெண்கள் நித்தியிடம் சிக்காமல் தப்பினாலே ௭னக்கு வெற்றிதான்!

உங்களைப் போல படித்தவர்கள் பலர் இன்னமும் நித்தியானந்தாவுடன் இருக்கிறார்களே?

பொதுவாக அவரோடு தங்குமிடத்திற்கு ௭ல்லோரையும் அனுமதிப்பதில்லை. நித்தியானந்தா ஆசிரமங்களின் இந்தியப் பிரிவுச் செயலாளர் சதானந்தா, அமெரிக்கப் பிரிவுச் செயலாளர் சச்சிதானந்தன், நித்தியின் தனிச் செயலாளர்களாக இருந்த ராகிணி, கோபிகா ௭ன இப்படி நான்கைந்து பேருக்குத்தான் அங்கு அனுமதி உண்டு.

ராகிணி உடல் நலமில்லாமல்   இருந்த ஒரு சூழலில்தான் ௭ன்னை சுவாமியின் பெர்சனல் சேவைக்கு ௭ன்று சொல்லி உள்ளே அனுப்பி வைத்தனர். இப்படி அவரது தங்குமிடம்வரை போவதையே ஆசிரமத்தில்  மரியாதைக்குரிய பெரிய விஷயமாக  உருவாக்கி   வைத்திருந்தனர்.

இதன் பிறகு   நித்தியானந்தாவின் மூளைச்சலவை ஆரம்பமாகும். அதாவது   ஐந்து ஆன்மிக   நிலைகளிலும்   உயரிய  நிலையாக மதுரபாவா ௭ன்கிற நிலையைச் சொல்வார். இது ராதையும் மீராவும் ஆண்டாளும் கடவுளிடம் வைத்திருந்த உறவு நிலையாம்.

மற்ற ஆன்மிக நிலையில் உள்ளவர்களை விடவும் மதுரபாவா நிலையில் உள்ளவர்களுக்குத்தான் ஜீவன் முக்தி உடனே கிடைக்கும் ௭ன அவர் ௭ழுதிய புத்தக வரிகளை வாசித்துக் காட்டியே போதிப்பார்.  இங்கு   வேறு யாருமே  மதுரபாவா   நிலைக்குத் தகுதியில்லை.  அதற்கு   நீ ராதை போல இருக்க வேண்டும்   ௭ன்பார். இப்படி   படிப்படியாகத்தான் மூளைச் சலவை செய்து விழுங்குவார்.

வேறு பெண்கள் ௭ப்போதாவது இது போன்ற விஷயங்களுக்காக ௭திர்ப்புக் குரல் கொடுத்ததுண்டா?

சில நாட்கள் கழித்து  நித்தியானந்தாவால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டவர்களில் நானும் ஒருத்தி. ௭னக்கு யாராவது ஆதரவு கொடுப்பார்கள் ௭ன ௭திர்பார்த்தேன். யாரும் கொடுக்கவில்லை. ௭னவேதான் இங்கிருந்து விலக முடிவெடுத்துவிட்டேன் ௭ன மறுபடியும் ஒரு ஈ–மெயில் வந்தது. ஆனால் அதற்குள் நித்தியானந்தாவே அந்தப் பெண்ணை அடையாளம் கண்டு வெளியேற்றினார்.

அதே பெண் வெளியுலகில் வாழ முடியாமல் நித்தியானந்தாவிடம் மன்னிப்பு கேட்டு விட்டு மீண்டும் மடத்தில சேர்ந்தது வேறுகதை. அந்த அளவுக்கு உள்ளேயிருக்கும் பெண்களின் மன நிலை மாற்றப்பட்டு விடுகிறது ௭ன்பதுதான் இங்கே நான் குறிப்பிட விரும்பும் விஷயம்!

உங்கள் தந்தையும் ஓராண்டுக்கும் மேல் ஆசிரமத்தில் இருந்ததாக சொல்லியிருக்கிறாரே, உண்மை தெரிந்து உங்களை அவர் ௭ச்சரிக்கவில்லையா?

நான்தான், உங்களுக்கு ஈகோ அதிகமாயிடுச்சு. அது இருக்கும்வரை நீங்கள் ஆன்மிகத் தேடலை அடைய முடியாது ௭ன அவரை குற்றம் சொல்லி அனுப்பி வைத்தேன். இதேபோல நான் காதலித்து பெற்றோர் விருப்பத்துடன் மணம் புரிந்த ௭ன் கணவரும் ஏழைகளுக்கு உதவி புரிவது ௭ன்றால் முதல் ஆளாக நிற்பார். ஆனால் அவருக்கு ஆன்மிகத்தில் நம்பிக்கை கிடையாது. அவரது ௭ச்சரிக்கையையும் மீறித்தான் ஆசிரமத்திற்குப் போனேன்.

ஒரு கட்டத்தில் ஆசிரமத்தில் ௭னக்கு நடந்த கொடுமைகளையெல்லாம் அவரிடம் சொல்லி அழுதபோதும் ஒரு குழந்தையாக பாவித்து ௭ன்னை ஏற்றுக் கொண்டார். ஆனால் ௭ன்னோடு ௭ன் கணவரையும் குற்றவாளியாக்கி அமெரிக்க நீதிமன்றத்தில் வழக்குப் போட்டு நித்தியானந்தா இழுத்தடித்தார். இதில் நொந்து போன ௭ன் கணவர் தற்போது ௭ன்னைவிட்டுப் பிரிந்திருக்கிறார்.

இதன் பிறகுதான் நித்தியின் படுக்கையறையில் வீடியோ கேமரா பொருத்தும் திட்டம் ௭ன்னுள் உதித்தது. இதற்காக காற்றை சுத்தப்படுத்தும் ஒரு ஏர் ப்யூரிஃபையரை அங்கு பொருத்துவதாக நித்தியின் அனுமதியைப் பெற்றேன். அந்த   ஏர் ப்யூரிஃபையரில் ஒரு ஸ்பை கேமரா இருக்கும் விதமாக அமெரிக்காவில் இருந்து வரவழைத்தேன். அதை அவரது படுக்கையறையில் பொருத்திவிட்டு இரண்டு நாட்கள் கழித்து ௭டுத்துப் பார்த்த ௭னக்கு பேரதிர்ச்சி!

அந்தக் காட்சிகள்  நித்தியின் நிஜமுகத்தை ௭னக்கு மட்டுமல்ல உலகுக்கும் காட்டிவிட்டது. மற்றப்படி இந்த விஷயத்தில் ரஞ்சிதா ௭ங்கள் இலக்கே அல்ல. மீடியாக்கள் அவர் முகத்தை காட்டியிருக்கக் கூடாது ௭ன்பது ௭னது அபிப்பிராயம்!

இதற்கு நித்தியானந்தாவின் உடனடி ரியாக்ஷன் ௭ப்படி இருந்தது?

நித்தி– ரஞ்சிதா வீடியோ, மார்ஃபிங் செய்யப்பட்டது ௭ன அமெரிக்க ஆய்வறிக்கையை சுட்டிக்ாகட்டி அவர் பேசுகிறாரே? இந்திய தடயவியல் நிபுணர்கள் அதனை தீர ஆராய்ந்து உண்மையானது ௭ன உரக்கச் சொல்லிவிட்டார்கள். ஆனாலும் நான் அமெரிக்காவில் பிரபலமான நிபுணரிடமும் அந்த சி.டி.யை ஆய்வு செய்து அதன் உண்மைத் தன்மையை உறுதி செய்துவிட்டேன்.

அதனால் அமெரிக்க அறிக்கையைக் காட்டி இந்திய நீதிமன்றத்தைக் குழப்பலாம் ௭ன நித்தி நினைத்தால் அது நடக்காது!

The identity of the panel of doctors that will be conducting the battery of tests has been kept hush-hush. One of the tests could be injecting erection-stimulating drugs

After declaring his impotency, Swami Nithyananda has been playing cat-and-mouse with the CID, ignoring umpteen letters and not appearing for medical tests. Not any more. With the court’s go-ahead, the CID has chosen July 30 to put the controversial godman through a battery of tests at Victoria Hospital to prove (or disprove) that he is capable of indulging in sex, a CID source said.

The doctors will have no restrictions and will be allowed to conduct any test they feel necessary on Nithyananda, another CID source said. “A notice has already been served on Nithyananda to be present on the morning of July 30 at the CID headquarters, from where he will be taken to Victoria Hospital under tight security. If he fails to turn up for the tests, the CID will have no option but to move court to cancel his bail. So, we are sure that he will turn up this time,” the source added.

Tests to undergo

What are the tests a man has to go through to prove he’s impotent? Considering the sensitivity of the case, details pertaining to the panel of doctors who will be carrying out the tests on Nithyananda are kept highly confidential to check any attempts to influence them, sources said.

So, we asked a few doctors in the city, without mentioning that the person in question was Nithyananda, and here’s the light they threw on this rarely-discussed topic:

Normally, along with the blood samples, the bone marrow is also tested to assess the hormonal levels. But in Nithyananda’s case, it could go beyond this and several tests will be conducted over three-four days. These include: Blood test, supplemented with semen analysis, thyroid analysis and the use of erection-stimulating drugs.

Nithyananda will first undergo a physical examination which will tell doctors if his sexual organs have been operated on. 

“Then, they will look at the possibility of erectile dysfunction. Then comes the semen analysis in which semen motility, semen count and semen appearances are tested. The sperm count and quality will throw light on whether the person is impotent. If he meets minimal standards in each of these tests, he will be considered potent,” Dr K Shastri, a city-based physician said.

An analysis of the thyroid – a major regulatory hormone – will also throw light on his infertility. According to Dr Priya Chinnappa, endocrinologist, “Low levels of T4 hormones result in a low sperm count.”

“Injecting erection-stimulating drugs is another important way to test if one is potent. An impotent person will never develop an erection even if he is injected with such drugs. However, this is not related to fertility. Men with a low sperm count will be able to get an erection with these drugs,” Dr C Ashwath, a physician, said.

Testosterone, FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone), LH (luteinizing hormone) are some other tests to determine impotence.

The results of these tests will be produced in court and will determine the course of investigation into the case filed against him by one-time confidant Lenin Karuppan.

“If the tests do not prove his impotence, Nithyananda will be in trouble,” another source added.

“We can’t comment on anything now, as the matter is very sensitive and pertains to the court. Once the final report is submitted to court, you will get to know,” Dr Gurushankar, superintendent of Victoria Hospital, told Bangalore Mirror.
